Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPA/Nhava Sheva) has emerged as a principal beneficiary of the ongoing recalibration of Red Sea and Suez Canal shipping services linking India to the Middle East and Europe. Two separate carrier announcements in early November 2026 have confirmed Nhava Sheva's retention in restructured rotations, positioning the port at the center of India's reconnected trade lanes.

Emirates Shipping Line (ESL) modified its South Red Sea (SRS) service effective November 1, transforming it into a dedicated shuttle between Nhava Sheva and Jeddah Islamic Port in Saudi Arabia . The new rotation—Nhava Sheva → Jeddah → Nhava Sheva—will deploy two vessels of 1,800 to 2,600 TEUs operating every nine days . ESL's broader North Red Sea (NRS) service also retains Nhava Sheva, connecting it to Djibouti, Aqaba, Ain Sokhna, and Sohar with two vessels of 1,700 to 2,500 TEUs on a fortnightly basis .

The more significant development for India-Europe connectivity came on November 2, when Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd announced that their jointly operated ME1 service under the Gemini Cooperation would return to trans-Suez routing after nearly three years of diversion around the Cape of Good Hope . The revised rotation explicitly retains both Nhava Sheva and Mundra: Mundra → Nhava Sheva → Salalah → Suez Canal → Tangier → Rotterdam → Wilhelmshaven → Hamburg → London → Algeciras → Tangier → Suez Canal → Salalah → Mundra . The first westbound sailing departs Salalah on November 4 aboard Atlanta Express, with the first eastbound departure from Tangier on November 13 .

JNPA's retention in these restructured services reflects its operational performance and strategic location. The port climbed to 22nd globally in the Container Port Performance Index 2025, retaining its status as India's best-performing container port . In September 2026 alone, JNPA handled over 835,000 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 28.63 percent, while April-September container volumes reached 4.66 million TEUs, up more than 17 percent . The port also serves as the gateway to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, providing direct rail access to India's northern hinterland .

For Indian exporters and importers, the return of Suez routing through Nhava Sheva offers tangible operational benefits. Shorter transit times between Indian west coast ports and Northern European destinations will enable faster inventory replenishment and reduce working capital tied up in inventory carrying costs . Some semi-urgent shipments that might otherwise require air freight could now be served by ocean freight on the shorter routing . However, carriers have cautioned that the restoration remains conditional on security conditions in the Red Sea, with Maersk stating that any alterations to Gemini services "will remain dependent on the ongoing stability in the Red Sea area" .

The parallel ESL and Gemini developments signal a cautious but coordinated reconnection of India's western coast to Red Sea and European markets. For JNPA, the retention in both service structures reinforces its role as the primary beneficiary of normalized routing, while the port's existing infrastructure investments and freight corridor connectivity position it to absorb the anticipated increase in container flows.
