VADHVAN — In a major milestone for India’s next-generation maritime logistics infrastructure, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and state-owned rail logistics leader Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR) have formally finalized a joint operating framework for the common intermodal rail yard serving the upcoming mega deepwater port at Vadhvan.

Under the finalized operational blueprint, CONCOR will serve as the neutral common-user terminal operator responsible for coordinating train shunting, yard dispatching, block-rake formation, and direct quayside-to-hinterland intermodal handovers. The design parameters integrate dedicated rail loops directly linked to the electrified Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), enabling the facility to run continuous double-stack container rakes from commercial berths directly into inland consumption hubs across Northern and Central India.

Senior officials from the port authority confirmed that the common intermodal complex has been engineered to process up to 32 daily freight rake movements during its initial phase of operation, targeting an overall rail evacuation share of more than 40% of the port's projected container traffic. By centralizing rail marshalling operations under a single coordinated authority rather than fragmenting shunting across isolated terminal operators, the framework is designed to eliminate inter-terminal bottlenecks, minimize locomotive dwell intervals, and prevent landside congestion along access road arteries.

The intermodal yard will feature automated optical character recognition (OCR) scanning portals, weigh-in-motion dynamic rail scales, and digital Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems synced directly into the National Logistics Portal (Marine). These integrated digital gates will validate customs e-seals and consignment weight telemetry while rakes remain in continuous motion, slashing departure clearance cycles to under two hours.

The formalization of the operating model provides high predictability for private container terminal concessionaires and major ocean liner alliances preparing long-term service rotations at Vadhvan, cementing the greenfield port's planned role as an ultra-high-velocity, deep-draft maritime gateway capable of handling next-generation 24,000-TEU container vessels.
