Volvo Car India is facing mounting pressure to increase its vehicle prices as prolonged geopolitical disruptions continue to wreak havoc on global supply chains. The Swedish luxury carmaker is grappling with unpredictable shipping schedules and a severe shortage of available vessels, which have substantially inflated the cost of raw materials and assembly kits imported into the country.

Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director of Volvo Car India, highlighted the severity of the situation in a recent interview, noting that delays that initially only extended customer wait times are now directly impacting the company's bottom line. "I don't think we have been able to pass it on (through price hikes). But I think it's inevitable, I would say," Malhotra stated, adding that if current freight market conditions persist, the automaker will have no choice but to pass these elevated transportation costs onto consumers.

This potential price adjustment would be the company's second of the year. Volvo previously raised prices across its vehicle portfolio by up to ₹1 lakh on May 1, citing similar persistent global supply-chain disruptions and fluctuations in foreign exchange rates.

Despite these logistical headwinds, the company is pushing forward with its aggressive electrification strategy. On Monday, Volvo launched its flagship EX90 electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) in India at an introductory ex-showroom price of ₹1.26 crore. The premium electric SUV boasts a claimed range of 625 kilometers on a single charge.

The introduction of the EX90 expands Volvo Car India's domestic portfolio to six models. The lineup currently features the XC60 and XC90 mild hybrids, alongside four dedicated electric models: the EX30, EC40, EX40, and the newly launched EX90. Moving forward, the automaker plans to maintain this momentum by introducing one new electric vehicle to the Indian market every year.

Rather than chasing aggressive sales volumes or immediate market share expansion, Malhotra emphasized that Volvo's near-term strategy in India is focused on solidifying its foundations. The company is actively prioritizing brand establishment, enhancing the premium customer ownership experience, and building out the necessary charging infrastructure to support its growing fleet of electric vehicles.
