Members of TT Club and UK P&I Club have approved a proposed merger that will bring two established mutual insurance organisations together under a broader transport-focused group. The initiative is designed to strengthen insurance and risk-management capabilities across maritime shipping, logistics, ports and container terminals.

The approvals followed separate special general meetings held by the two clubs. The combined organisation is planned to operate under the parent company United Transport Mutual Limited, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals. The merger is scheduled to take effect on 20 February 2027.

The two organisations serve complementary parts of the global cargo supply chain. UK P&I Club provides protection and indemnity insurance to shipowners and operators, while TT Club specialises in insurance and risk-management services for transport and logistics businesses, including container owners, ports, terminals and freight operators.

The combined group is expected to have annual premium income of approximately US$750 million and free reserves of around US$888 million. These resources are intended to strengthen the group's financial capacity and support its ability to respond to complex risks across international transport networks.

The merger reflects the growing connections between risks affecting ships, ports, terminals and inland logistics operations. Cargo incidents, equipment failures, operational accidents, cyber threats and geopolitical disruption can affect several parts of a supply chain at the same time. Combining specialist knowledge may help the organisations develop a broader understanding of these interconnected exposures.

Both clubs have indicated that they will retain their individual names, brands and market positions. Members are also expected to continue working with their existing underwriting, claims and service teams, while each club will maintain its own committee to provide focused oversight of its operations and member needs.

For shipping companies, freight forwarders, container operators and port businesses, the proposed structure could provide access to a wider pool of technical expertise, claims experience and risk-prevention resources. It may also support the development of services addressing emerging risks, although the merger does not automatically mean lower premiums or changes to existing policy terms.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approval, and implementation will take place in stages. Until the merger becomes effective, both organisations will continue operating under their existing arrangements. The development nevertheless represents a significant consolidation in the transport insurance sector, reflecting the need for financial strength and specialised risk management as global cargo supply chains become increasingly interconnected.
