DAMMAM / MUMBAI — In a major bilateral maritime initiative engineered to de-bottleneck cross-border industrial trade and eliminate multi-port transshipment delays across the Arabian Sea, the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), in direct operational partnership with the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri Line), has officially launched a scheduled direct fast-transit container feeder service connecting King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam directly with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA / Nhava Sheva) on India's western seaboard.

The newly inaugurated short-sea connection deploys dedicated cellular container tonnage operating on a synchronized, fixed-day weekly rotation. Designed to establish an express maritime turnpike between the Kingdom’s Eastern Province manufacturing hub and the premier container gateway of Western India, the service delivers a guaranteed blue-water sailing transit of just four days between pilot boarding stations.

Historically, industrial shippers, polymer converters, and trading syndicates operating across the Dammam, Jubail, and broader Eastern Province basins faced persistent supply chain friction when routing ocean containers to South Asia. Outbound containerized freight—primarily high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), synthetic resins, and specialized industrial chemicals—was routinely routed through secondary multi-leg feeder relays in the upper or southern Persian Gulf. Cargo was frequently barged or shifted on coastal vessels to intermediate relay hubs before waiting for available mother vessel space bound for the Indian Subcontinent. This traditional multi-hub routing routinely introduced 10 to 15 days of transit dwell time, exposed delicate chemical consignments to intermediate quayside handling risks, and tied up specialized ISO tank containers.

The direct Mawani–Bahri Dammam-to-Nhava Sheva feeder circumvents these transshipment bottlenecks entirely. By providing point-to-point berthing calls out of King Abdulaziz Port, the service ensures that petrochemical feedstocks, intermediate polymers, and metals reach plastic compounding mills, packaging converters, and automotive component fabricators across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the National Capital Region (NCR) without intermediate transshipment delays.

To maintain schedule integrity and handle high-density industrial cargo, Bahri Line has deployed modern, shallow-draft cellular container tonnage ranging between 2,200 and 2,800 TEUs. The vessels feature advanced hydrodynamic hull designs and fuel-efficient propulsion machinery that permit round-the-clock navigation along terminal approach channels without waiting for tidal berthing windows. Each vessel in the rotation is outfitted with over 350 active reefer plugs and certified hazardous cargo bays featuring automated thermal monitoring, gas-detection arrays, and foam fire-suppression systems compliant with IMO Class 3, 6, 8, and 9 specifications.

On the return westbound voyages to Dammam, the shuttle accommodates heavy two-way trade flows, offering dedicated space for Indian engineering goods, industrial machinery, electrical equipment, agro-commodities, and building inputs supplying ongoing industrial and municipal developments across Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province and central regions.

To match rapid ocean transit with touchless landside clearance, Mawani and Bahri Line have integrated King Abdulaziz Port's quayside operations directly with Saudi Arabia’s FASAH digital trade portal, establishing an automated Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) link with Indian Customs’ ICEGATE single-window platform. Ocean manifests, hazardous material declarations, and cryptographic electronic cargo seals (e-Seals) are validated in real time while vessels navigate the Arabian Sea. Upon berthing at Nhava Sheva, pre-cleared boxes can transition immediately under Direct Port Delivery (DPD) protocols onto awaiting Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) rail rakes or direct road drayage, compressing quayside container dwell times to under 24 hours.

Speaking at the commercial launch at King Abdulaziz Port, senior representatives from Mawani noted that the new loop fulfills key performance metrics under Saudi Arabia’s National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS) and Vision 2030, which seek to expand direct maritime connectivity and anchor the Kingdom as a global logistics crossroads. Commercial management from Bahri Line confirmed that maiden sailings operated with near-total booking utilization across chemical, retail, and forwarding desks in Dammam, Riyadh, and Mumbai, with the joint operating committee actively preparing arrangements to add vessel capacity as regional fourth-quarter cargo volumes accelerate.
