Union Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar conducted an on-ground review of the upcoming all-weather greenfield Vadhvan Port project in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, emphasizing strict adherence to project timelines and close multi-agency coordination to maintain construction momentum.

During an inspection visit to the Varor site, the Secretary evaluated key ongoing and preliminary work packages, including offshore and near-shore land reclamation, breakwater construction, external road and rail connectivity corridors, utility networks, and land acquisition progress.

Senior officials from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Vadhvan Port Project Ltd (VPPL) briefed the Secretary on recent milestones achieved across engineering packages and presented roadmaps for forthcoming development phases.

Key Priorities & Directives from the Review

  • Inter-Agency Alignment: Underscoring the scale and strategic significance of the project, the Shipping Secretary called for seamless coordination among maritime authorities, state agencies, and private contractors to prevent bottlenecking as parallel enabling works scale up.

  • Execution Timelines: Stakeholders were instructed to closely monitor critical-path activities especially breakwater development and deep-draft channel preparations to ensure the project meets its planned commissioning milestones without cost or time overruns.

  • Connectivity and Logistics Integration: The review stressed fast-tracking road and dedicated freight rail links connecting the port to the hinterland, ensuring cargo-handling capacity is matched by evacuation infrastructure from day one.

The foundation stone for the mega port was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2024. Being developed with an estimated capital outlay of ₹76,220 crore, Vadhvan is designed as a deep-draft maritime gateway capable of handling ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) that cannot dock at conventional coastal terminals.

Once fully operational, the port is projected to position India among the world’s top 10 container handling gateways, significantly enhancing national EXIM competitiveness and easing long-term congestion along India’s western seaboard.
