<p data-path-to-node="5">&nbsp;Capt. Binesh Kumar Tyagi, Chairman and Managing Director of state-run <b data-path-to-node="5" data-index-in-node="79">Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI)</b>, has been elected President of the <b data-path-to-node="5" data-index-in-node="155">Indian National Shipowners’ Association (INSA)</b> for the 2026–27 tenure. The election took place during the 46th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the apex shipowners' body in Mumbai on September 24.</p><p data-path-to-node="6">With a maritime career spanning more than three decades, Capt. Tyagi brings extensive operational and administrative experience to the leadership of India’s premier national shipowning representative body. Starting his journey with SCI in 1990 as a Trainee Nautical Officer, he commanded various commercial vessels as Master before transitioning to shore management in 2004. Over the past two decades, he has managed diverse portfolios including technical operations, chartering, fleet vetting, offshore services, liner and passenger transport, and vessel sale and purchase.</p><p data-path-to-node="7">Capt. Tyagi’s election comes at a critical juncture for domestic maritime commerce, as Indian shipowners face shifting global emission regulations, geopolitical corridor disruptions, and the Indian government's push to scale domestic-flagged tonnage under the Maritime Amrit Kaal 2047 roadmap.</p><h3 data-path-to-node="9">Key Operational Highlights &amp; Industry Priorities</h3><ul data-path-to-node="10"><li><p data-path-to-node="10,0,0"><b data-path-to-node="10,0,0" data-index-in-node="0">Apex Industry Representation:</b> As the head of INSA, Capt. Tyagi will lead the association’s engagement with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Directorate General of Shipping, and international bodies such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO).</p></li><li><p data-path-to-node="10,1,0"><b data-path-to-node="10,1,0" data-index-in-node="0">Expanding Indian-Flagged Tonnage:</b> A key objective under his leadership will be addressing structural disparities between Indian-flagged vessels and foreign-flagged operators, advocating for fiscal parity, favorable financing frameworks, and incentives to encourage national flag adoption.</p></li><li><p data-path-to-node="10,2,0"><b data-path-to-node="10,2,0" data-index-in-node="0">Green Transition and IMO Compliance:</b> With stringent decarbonization timelines set by the IMO and regional regulatory mandates taking effect, INSA will focus on helping domestic fleet operators adopt alternative fuels, optimize energy efficiency, and retrofit existing vessels.</p></li><li><p data-path-to-node="10,3,0"><b data-path-to-node="10,3,0" data-index-in-node="0">Coastal Shipping and Multimodal Integration:</b> Aligning with central policy initiatives aimed at doubling coastal cargo share, the association under Capt. Tyagi will push for rationalized coastal cabotage frameworks, bunker fuel tax optimizations, and improved port turnaround times for Indian-flagged coastal feeders.</p></li><li><p data-path-to-node="10,4,0"><b data-path-to-node="10,4,0" data-index-in-node="0">Seafarer Welfare and Training:</b> Capitalizing on his operational background, Capt. Tyagi is expected to prioritize maritime human resources, upgrading skill training for seafarers to operate next-generation green-fueled and automated vessels.</p></li></ul>
