German Logistics Giant Converts Long-Standing Strategic Alliance into Full Ownership, Adding Five Central Belt Depots, 100 Commercial Vehicles, and 46,500 sq m of Warehousing

KEMPTEN / ARMADALE — In a major consolidation of European road freight and cross-border groupage logistics, family-owned German logistics integrator DACHSER has finalized the full corporate acquisition of its long-standing Scottish transportation partner, Drummond Distribution.

The transaction formally converts an 18-year commercial operating relationship—established in 2008—into complete asset ownership. While the parties have mutually agreed not to disclose the financial purchase consideration, the deal brings Drummond’s established industrial and ambient food logistics footprint into Dachser’s European Logistics network. Drummond, a family-owned business established in 1927 and headquartered in Armadale, West Lothian, generated approximately £20 million in revenue in 2025 with a workforce of around 175 logistics professionals.

The buyout provides Dachser with its first wholly owned operating locations in Scotland, strategically expanding its UK land-transport network across the high-density Central Belt corridor between Glasgow and Edinburgh without creating overlapping infrastructure.

Fleet Scale, Asset Footprint & Operational Integration

The acquisition injects immediate physical transport capacity and multi-facility warehousing into Dachser's UK & Ireland operational division:

  • Overland Transport Fleet: Incorporates approximately 100 heavy commercial trucks and 80 trailers, giving Dachser captive road-haulage capacity to handle high-frequency regional distribution and long-haul trunking.

  • Contract Logistics Footprint: Adds five strategic operational facilities spanning approximately 46,500 square meters of warehouse space, situated along key highway junctions—predominantly the M8 motorway connecting Edinburgh and Glasgow.

  • Specialized Commodity Handling: Drummond's operations center on the palletized distribution of industrial goods, engineering equipment, and temperature-tolerant ambient food and consumer products.

  • Management Structure & Governance Continuity: Operational leadership will remain anchored under the existing management team led by Damon Burns. As Drummond's previous owners gradually transition out, the Scottish management committee will report directly to Mark Rollinson, Managing Director of Dachser UK & Ireland.

Connecting Scottish Exporters Directly to Continental European Corridors

Historically, Scottish exporters—particularly manufacturers of industrial machinery, specialized chemicals, automotive components, and ambient food and beverage products—faced fragmented multi-carrier networks to access continental European markets. Cross-border movements typically required handoffs between localized regional truckers, English cross-dock terminals, and separate customs clearance brokers.

By bringing Drummond into Dachser’s standardized IT and logistics architecture:

  1. Direct Groupage Synchronization: Consolidated pallet shipments originating from Scottish factories can move under a single consignment note directly into Dachser’s Eurohubs in Überherrn (Germany), Bratislava (Slovakia), and Clermont-Ferrand (France).

  2. Integrated Customs Clearance: Post-Brexit border friction is mitigated through Dachser’s centralized digital customs platform, providing automated electronic import/export clearance and pre-lodged declarations to skirt Channel port delays.

  3. Daily Scheduled Linehauls: Daily linehaul schedules will directly link Armadale and Central Belt sites to Dachser’s primary English hubs in Northampton, Rochdale, and Dartford, compressing transit lead times to Western Europe by 24 to 48 hours.

Corporate Leadership & Executive Perspectives

Commenting on the strategic buyout, Alexander Tonn, Chief Operating Officer (COO) Road Logistics at Dachser, stated:

"The acquisition of Drummond strengthens our network in the United Kingdom and sets the course for further growth. Scotland’s export-oriented industry will benefit from seamless and rapid connections to all European economic regions. We have worked closely with Drummond for nearly two decades, and we are very pleased that their skilled employees are now becoming an integral part of our Dachser family."

Underlining the operational continuity for domestic customers, Damon Burns of Drummond Distribution highlighted:

"We have a long-standing and trusting partnership with Dachser and share the exact same core values. The backing of a family-owned global enterprise that has grown sustainably over many decades provides our customers and employees with a high degree of security and stability, while opening substantial new growth avenues and export potential for Scottish businesses."

Dachser confirmed that full systems integration—including the deployment of Dachser’s proprietary Domino transport management system and Mikado warehouse management system—will roll out across the five Scottish facilities over the coming quarters to establish synchronized digital tracking from Scottish factory gates to end consumers across Europe.
