ABU DHABI / FUJAIRAH — In a major expansion of the United Arab Emirates’ national multimodal freight network, national railway developer and operator Etihad Rail, through its commercial freight subsidiary Etihad Rail Freight, has joined forces with AD Ports Group to formally launch a scheduled direct freight rail service connecting Fujairah Terminals on the country's eastern coastline directly to the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD) in Musaffah.

The operationalization of the 200-kilometer rail link creates an unbroken, bonded heavy-haul landbridge connecting the deepwater maritime facilities of the Gulf of Oman straight into the capital’s primary industrial, manufacturing, and distribution core.

A central milestone of the commercial rollout is the official international accreditation of the ICAD inland rail depot under its own United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations (UN/LOCODE), “AECAD”. This designation integrates ICAD into global maritime bills of lading and booking manifests, empowering international ocean carriers, shipping lines, freight forwarders, and industrial cargo owners to book containers directly from foreign ports to ICAD as a recognized port of destination and customs discharge point.

Service Architecture and Heavy-Haul Rail Parameters

Running along the heavy-haul tracks of the UAE National Rail Network, the newly inaugurated service introduces fixed-day scheduled logistics loops between the East Coast and Abu Dhabi:

  • Fixed-Schedule Operations: The direct freight train operates on a scheduled frequency of three round trips per week, synchronized with container vessel rotations, bulk discharges, and feeder calls at Fujairah Terminals.

  • High-Volume Intermodal Rakes: Powered by high-efficiency diesel-electric locomotives pulling rakes of intermodal container flatbed wagons, each train formation is capable of hauling up to 156 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) or substantial tonnages of industrial dry bulk in a single movement.

  • Direct Quay-to-Railhead Transfer: Containers discharged from container vessels at Fujairah are transferred onto waiting rail flatcars directly within the port’s railhead sidings, eliminating multiple road drayage transfers and off-dock holding stages.

  • Transit Turnaround and Velocity: By operating non-stop over dedicated rail tracks isolated from metropolitan highway gridlock, the train traverses the 200-kilometer alignment to Musaffah efficiently, ensuring predictable delivery windows for manufacturing lines.

In-Land Customs Port and Clearance Velocity at 'AECAD'

The integration of the UN Locode "AECAD" transforms the ICAD logistics terminal from a standard cargo siding into a fully operational, bonded inland port:

  • Bonded In-Transit Corridors: Inbound containers landing at Fujairah clear port gates under automated electronic transit seals (e-Seals) without undergoing physical customs inspections at the coastal terminal.

  • On-Site Statutory Handshakes: Upon arrival at the AECAD depot, cargo owners, industrial manufacturers, and third-party logistics (3PL) providers execute customs declarations, container scanning, physical inspections, and duty settlements directly on-site.

  • Integration with Advanced Digital Platforms: The yard’s Terminal Operating System (TOS) is synchronized with AD Ports Group’s digital single window—the Advanced Trade & Logistics Platform (ATLP)—and UAE Federal Customs systems, enabling paperless release notes and automated smart-gate processing.

  • Supply Chain Compression: Bringing customs clearance and container destuffing directly adjacent to manufacturing plants and regional warehouses in Musaffah compresses cargo dwell times between vessel berthing and factory delivery by over 40%.

Strategic Decongestion and Environmental Dividends

Prior to the commissioning of the rail corridor, industrial enterprises in Abu Dhabi relied exclusively on multi-axle diesel tractor-trailers to haul import-export (EXIM) containers and raw feedstocks across arterial highways connecting the eastern seaboard with the capital:

  • Highway Trucking Abatement: Each single freight train run removes between 150 and 200 heavy commercial trucks from the congested E11, E311, and arterial trans-desert highway routes, significantly improving road safety and curtailing surface asphalt degradation.

  • Decarbonization Alignment: Shifting heavy industrial freight from road drayage to the national rail grid reduces carbon emissions per tonne-kilometer by up to 75%, directly supporting the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative and federal green logistics mandates.

  • Operating Cost Predictability: Fixed rail tariffs protect shippers and manufacturers from volatile spot road-freight pricing, driver shortages, and port demurrage charges linked to terminal gate queues.

Strategic Resilience and Chokepoint Mitigation

The direct Fujairah-to-ICAD rail corridor serves as a geopolitical and operational hedge for regional and international trade:

  • Strait of Hormuz Bypass: Located on the Gulf of Oman, Fujairah Terminals provides ocean liners with direct access to open Indian Ocean trade routes. Offloading cargo on the eastern seaboard enables container lines to bypass the congested and geopolitically sensitive Strait of Hormuz completely, saving sailing time and avoiding elevated maritime war-risk insurance premiums.

  • Resilient Industrial Feedstock Arteries: Heavy industrial manufacturers, steel producers, petrochemical compounders, and construction entities in Abu Dhabi gain an unbroken, land-based supply line that guarantees constant inventory flow regardless of marine transit conditions inside the Arabian Gulf.

Executive Commentary

Speaking on the official commercial commissioning of the service, Omar Alsebeyi, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Rail Freight, highlighted the customer-centric value of the partnership:

"The launch of our new Fujairah-ICAD rail service represents another important step in unlocking the full potential of the UAE National Rail Network for our customers. Through our partnership with AD Ports Group, we have created an innovative logistics solution that goes beyond transportation by bringing key port services closer to where cargo is ultimately needed. By combining rail connectivity with customs-enabled inland cargo handling and the ability to book cargo directly to ICAD under UN Locode AECAD, we are helping customers move goods more efficiently, simplify logistics processes, and reduce the time between vessel arrival and final delivery."

Saif Al Mazrouei, Chief Executive Officer of the Ports Cluster at AD Ports Group, emphasized the broader macroeconomic impact:

"Strong trade corridors are built by connecting gateways with the industrial and commercial ecosystems they serve. The integrated service brings together Fujairah Terminals, the UAE National Rail Network, and ICAD (AECAD) as part of a more connected system, extending the reach of our port infrastructure beyond the terminal and bringing essential services closer to customers. Through our partnership with Etihad Rail, we are enabling seamless, reliable, and resilient cargo flows while providing businesses with greater flexibility in how they access markets and manage their supply chains. This approach strengthens connectivity across the trade ecosystem, supports long-term growth, and reinforces Abu Dhabi's position as a gateway of choice for trade and industry."

Operational teams confirmed that initial rakes are operating at strong utilization rates, with plans underway between Etihad Rail and AD Ports Group to scale service frequency as regional trade and fourth-quarter industrial manufacturing volumes expand.
