Vallarpadam Terminal Records 51% Year-on-Year Volume Surge, Absorbing 51 Ad-Hoc Mainline Diversions While Capitalizing on Co-Located Free Trade Warehousing Zone Synergies

KOCHI — Marking an operational milestone for maritime trade along India’s southwestern coastline, DP World Cochin’s International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam has recorded its highest-ever monthly throughput, handling 97,952 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during the month of August 2026. The performance reflects a 51% year-on-year surge compared to the corresponding period in 2025, solidifying the terminal's status as a gateway and transshipment hub for South Asian international trade lanes.

The historic volume builds upon sequential operational acceleration across the primary monsoon navigation window. The facility logged 74,644 TEUs in June and 74,585 TEUs in July, before volumes surged past the 97,000-TEU threshold in August.

Operational Resilience Amid Global Reroutings

A key factor behind the August record was the terminal’s ability to handle ad-hoc vessel traffic without triggering quayside congestion or landside gate dwell times. Between June and August, the ICTT accommodated 51 ad-hoc commercial vessel calls, absorbing container loads diverted by global ocean carriers seeking congestion-free interchange nodes amid ongoing geopolitical disruptions along primary East-West shipping lanes.

The terminal handled this surge while maintaining its operational turnaround velocity:

  • Berth and Crane Productivity: Leveraging its expanded fleet of Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes and 100% electrified Rubber-Tyred Gantry Cranes (e-RTGs), terminal operators sustained high gross crane move rates, enabling rapid box evacuations for ultra-large mainline container vessels.

  • Tidal Navigation Integration: Deepwater operations were bolstered by Cochin Port Authority’s active Dynamic Tidal Navigation and Real-Time Under-Keel Clearance (RT-UKC) telemetry, unlocking extended 4-to-5-hour berthing windows and allowing heavily laden feeder and mainline ships to berth without idling at outer sea anchorages.

  • Direct Mainline Loading: Over 50% of cargo processed at the terminal was loaded directly onto mainline mother vessels serving direct loops to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean, reducing multi-port feeder transfers and transit times for regional shippers.

Free Trade Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) Integration

The cargo surge at ICTT coincided with strong volume growth at DP World’s Cochin Economic Zone—Kerala’s first Free Trade Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) and the only facility in India co-located directly inside a Major Port boundary.

The FTWZ enables global traders, chemical manufacturers, and domestic EXIM enterprises to conduct duty-deferred bonded warehousing, container de-stuffing, re-packaging, and value-added sorting within immediate haulage reach of the container berths. By integrating quayside container discharges directly into the FTWZ's automated racking systems, supply chain operators avoid off-dock transportation bottlenecks, streamlining consolidation loops for export cargo originating across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

Corporate Leadership Commentary

Commenting on the operational milestone, Hemant Kumar Ruia, Country Manager, Subcontinent (India) at DP World, stated:

"Our record throughput in August, together with consistently strong volumes in recent months, reflects the dedication of our operational workforce and the trust our customers place in DP World Cochin. As global supply chain networks evolve, our primary focus remains centered on delivering safe, reliable, and predictable container operations that keep Indian merchandise moving seamlessly.

With state-of-the-art infrastructure, deep draft capability, and substantial annual capacity, ICTT is equipped to handle the world's largest container ships and absorb sudden volume spikes while delivering faster vessel turnarounds. As India accelerates its maritime logistics ambitions under Maritime Amrit Kaal 2047, we will continue expanding Cochin’s stature as a premier trade gateway that powers regional economic growth."

Regional EXIM Trade Impact

The milestone is significant for regional exporters of agricultural commodities, spices, coir, tea, specialty marine seafood, and engineered goods. Operating as an efficient transshipment and direct-gateway terminal, DP World Cochin provides local manufacturers an alternative to offshore transshipment hubs, lowering inventory holding expenses and protecting Indian supply chains from external logistics shocks.

Terminal management confirmed that capital improvements—including expanded yard stacking blocks and advanced container telemetry—are underway to sustain this operational run through the upcoming fourth-quarter global export peak.
