NEW DELHI —Vehicle owners in India will no longer have to peel off and replace the physical FASTag sticker from their windshields when switching to a different bank. In a major convenience boost for motorists, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari unveiled ‘OneTag’, a national FASTag bank portability facility, during the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai.
Jointly developed under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) framework by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL)—promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)—and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the system functions similarly to mobile number portability (MNP).

What is 'OneTag'?
Under the existing system, if a FASTag customer wished to change their service provider or issuer bank—due to service issues, bank policy changes, or personal preference—they were required to formally cancel the existing FASTag, wait for wallet settlement, physically remove the RFID tag from the vehicle's windshield, and affix a new tag issued by another bank.
With the rollout of OneTag, this requirement has been eliminated:

Same Physical Tag: Motorists can retain the RFID sticker already affixed to their vehicle.
Unchanged Identifiers: The existing Tag ID and vehicle registration number remain unchanged.
Backend Transfer: The tag is digitally mapped from the old issuer to the new bank within the central NETC network managed by NPCI. All subsequent toll transaction deductions will be handled directly through the new bank account or wallet.
Division of Responsibilities Between Banks
Current (Old) Bank: Handles customer verification, processes remaining balance refunds, and settles any pending toll transactions or dues associated with the old wallet.
New Bank: Completes the digital onboarding, issues the linked wallet/account facility, and manages customer service going forward.
How to Port FASTag via the 'Rajmargyatra' App
The portability service has been integrated into NHAI’s official ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile application:

Download & Log In: Open the NHAI Rajmargyatra app and sign in using the mobile number registered with the current FASTag.
Portability Check: Navigate to the OneTag section, select Check Portability, and enter the vehicle registration number to verify eligibility.
Verification & Consent: Complete the multi-factor identity verification and provide user consent to initiate the switch.
Bank Selection: Select the preferred new issuer bank from the list of participating institutions (including major public and private banks).
Completion: Upon successful KYC and digital onboarding by the new bank, the tag automatically switches networks without any need to touch the vehicle's windshield.
Broader Impact
India currently reports a FASTag penetration rate exceeding 98%, with over 13 crore tags issued nationwide and nearly 6 crore actively in use. Aside from saving motorists time and hassle, the OneTag initiative significantly cuts down the environmental and operational footprint associated with manufacturing, shipping, and disposing of millions of plastic RFID tags annually.
