Leading Multimodal Logistics Integrator Integrates Zero-Emission Heavy Haulage Across Key Inland Terminals
GURUGRAM / NAVI MUMBAI — In a major step toward decarbonizing container freight transport across northern and western industrial belts, Gateway Distriparks Limited (GDL), one of India’s premier integrated intermodal logistics operators, has formally deployed an initial commercial fleet of heavy-duty battery-electric and liquefied natural gas (LNG) commercial tractor-trailers developed by Blue Energy Motors.
The commercial rollout, inaugurated from GDL’s flagship Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Garhi Harsaru in Gurugram, integrates purpose-built alternative-fuel prime movers into active container drayage workflows. The vehicles are dedicated to first- and last-mile container transfers linking inland railheads, regional container freight stations (CFS), and major manufacturing clusters across the National Capital Region (NCR) and the western industrial corridor.
Overcoming Landside Emissions in Heavy Container Haulage
Container drayage and short-haul factory-to-depot feeder transit have historically relied almost entirely on conventional multi-axle diesel trailers. High-density idling outside container yard gates and prolonged stop-and-go runs across municipal bypasses contribute heavily to localized diesel emissions and elevated Scope 3 freight footprints.
The deployment of Blue Energy Motors' heavy-duty commercial tractors directly addresses this environmental bottleneck:
Purpose-Built Electric Drivetrains: The heavy-duty battery-electric prime movers are engineered specifically for high-torque container drayage, hauling fully laden 20-foot and 40-foot ISO containers (up to 40–55 tonnes gross combination weight) without generating localized tailpipe emissions or acoustic pollution.
Smart Fleet Management and Regenerative Braking: Equipped with high-density battery packs, intelligent telematics, and regenerative braking systems, the vehicles capture braking energy on high-frequency city-depot loops, maximizing operational battery range and lowering per-kilometer traction costs.
Captive Charging and Fueling Infrastructure: Operating in tandem with dedicated high-power DC fast-charging bays and cryogenic fuel dispensing corridors established by Blue Energy Motors, the fleet maintains round-the-clock commercial availability, ensuring that battery replenishment cycles sync with terminal shift changeovers.
Synergy with Intermodal Rail Corridors and Decarbonization Mandates
The induction of alternative-fuel road tractors complements GDL’s core intermodal container rail network, which connects inland dry ports directly to gateway seaports such as JNPA (Nhava Sheva), Mundra, and Pipavav:
True End-to-End Green Corridors: By pairing electrified double-stack container rakes operating on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) with electric and LNG drayage tractors on the road legs, GDL provides shippers with an unbroken, low-carbon intermodal logistics chain.
Meeting Enterprise ESG Compliance: Multinationals in the automotive, consumer electronics, pharmaceutical, and retail sectors operating under strict corporate Scope 3 sustainability targets can now audit and verify substantial carbon reductions on both linehaul and drayage legs.
Proven Corridors: Blue Energy Motors' green commercial fleets have already clocked tens of millions of operational kilometers across the Delhi-Mumbai freight corridor, validating the commercial durability, battery thermal safety, and cost viability of heavy-duty green logistics in Indian weather conditions.
Executive Commentary and Leadership Vision
Highlighting the strategic importance of the clean fleet rollout, Samvid Gupta, Joint Managing Director of Gateway Distriparks Limited, stated:
"Sustainability is an increasingly critical priority across global supply chains. At Gateway Distriparks, we are firmly committed to adopting advanced technologies that advance our decarbonization objectives while upholding the schedule dependability and operating efficiency that our customers rely on. The commercial deployment of these electric heavy trailers for first- and last-mile connectivity represents a decisive operational milestone, demonstrating the concrete economic and logistical viability of clean heavy-duty vehicles in day-to-day container logistics."
Adding to the collaboration, Anand Mimani, CEO – EV & New Energy at Blue Energy Motors, noted:
"The successful transition toward clean mobility in heavy-duty commercial transport will be driven by field-proven platforms that deliver high uptime, durability, and commercial viability in demanding real-world applications. Deploying our purpose-built electric trucks with an intermodal leader like Gateway Distriparks proves that zero-emission heavy freight is ready for scale across India’s core trade corridors."
