CHANGI / BONN — Expanding its intercontinental healthcare transport network, global logistics integrator DHL Group, in strategic partnership with Changi Airport Group (CAG), has finalized plans and commenced development of its dedicated DHL Singapore Coldchain Hub at Changi Nexus One within the Changi Airfreight Centre.
The multi-million-dollar facility forms an integral part of DHL Group's broader strategic €2 billion capital deployment under its Strategy 2030: DHL Health Logistics initiative. Situated squarely inside Changi’s 24/7 Free Trade Zone, the complex directly addresses the rapid growth of the Asia-Pacific pharmaceutical logistics market—which is projected to surge toward $239 billion by 2031—driven by booming cross-border shipments of vaccines, specialty biopharmaceuticals, oncology therapies, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
Direct Airside Apron Integration and Thermal Precision
The facility is custom-engineered to eliminate temperature excursions during the critical interface between long-haul widebody aircraft holds and shoreside storage vaults:
Airside-Adjacent Footprint at Changi Nexus One: Spanning 3,047 square meters within the Changi Nexus One complex, the facility features direct apron connectivity. Changi Nexus One represents the airport perimeter’s greenest logistics structure, holding dual BCA Green Mark Platinum and Green Mark Platinum Positive Energy Building certifications.
Dual-Zone Precision Climate Control: Built in accordance with strict World Health Organization (WHO) and Good Distribution Practice (GDP) standards, the hub houses dedicated cold-room zones calibrated for +2°C to +8°C (refrigerated biologics and vaccines) and +15°C to +25°C (controlled ambient therapeutics), supported by specialized deep-freeze staging capabilities for advanced clinical specimens.
Tarmac Cold Dollies and Hermetic Transfer: To neutralize Singapore’s equatorial ambient heat and humidity during cargo transits across the ramp, DHL deploys insulated, battery-electric cool dollies and enclosed airside transfer vehicles, guaranteeing an unbroken cold chain from the aircraft bellyhold directly into the facility’s receiving chambers.
Multi-Divisional Synergy Across Singapore’s Logistics Grid
The commissioning of the Changi cold hub anchors a broader multi-divisional reinforcement of DHL Group's healthcare infrastructure across Singapore:
DHL Global Forwarding Health Logistics Network: The Changi Coldchain Hub will serve as an anchor transshipment node within DHL Global Forwarding's global Health Logistics Air Freight Network, synchronizing scheduled pharma trade loops connecting North American and European manufacturing centers with Southeast Asia, China, and Australasia.
Synergy with Jurong Pharma Hubs: The airport airside facility interfaces directly with DHL Supply Chain’s expanding contract logistics footprint in western Singapore—including the 8,200-square-meter Pharma Hub at Jurong Pier and the newly commissioned 8,000-square-meter Pharma Hub 2 (providing 7,680 temperature-controlled pallet positions with humidity capped below 60%).
GDP-Compliant Express Air Network: The facility links seamlessly with dedicated GDP-compliant sorting and staging lanes at DHL Express's South Asia Hub, accelerating same-day and next-day clinical trial sample and diagnostic dispatches.
Regional Supply Chain Resilience and Executive Perspectives
Praveen Gregory, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, noted the operational urgency behind the investment:
"Healthcare supply chains across Asia-Pacific are evolving rapidly as demand grows for biologics, specialty medicines, and other temperature-sensitive products that require greater precision, resilience, and spe
ed. In healthcare logistics, precision is non-negotiable—an excursion of just a few degrees can compromise the integrity of high-value life-saving therapies. By anchoring this dedicated Coldchain Hub directly at Changi Airport's airside, we eliminate transit friction, provide real-time digital visibility, and guarantee unbroken thermal protection for our customers across the globe."
CAG executive leadership emphasized that coupling Changi Airport's extensive global bellyhold frequencies with DHL's specialized multi-temperature infrastructure cements Singapore’s standing as the premier, trusted aviation gateway for high-value life sciences logistics across the Indo-Pacific.
