Indigenous 1,000-kg Payload Amphibious Drone Utilizes Retractable Hydrofoils to Bypass Runway Infrastructure Across Island and Littoral Corridors

BENGALURU — Bengaluru-based deep-tech aerospace startup Aspera Industries has officially taken the wraps off its flagship uncrewed aircraft platform, 'Eureka', an autonomous amphibious cargo seaplane purpose-built to execute heavy-lift freight transit without touching a conventional airport runway.

Engineered to operate entirely from open water bodies, sheltered coastal bays, and major inland rivers, Eureka addresses a long-standing compromise in regional freight distribution: bridging the gap between slow maritime shipping and capital-intensive traditional air cargo. The uncrewed platform is designed to haul a 1,000-kilogram (1-tonne) commercial payload over an operational range of 2,000 kilometers, cruising autonomously at an altitude of approximately 6,500 feet.

By treating the world’s coastlines and waterways as natural runways, the startup aims to unlock agile, high-frequency supply chain loops for isolated archipelago territories—such as India's Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands—alongside regional coastal manufacturing belts across the Indo-Pacific.

Engineering Innovation: Retractable Hydrofoils Replace Stepped Hulls

Traditional seaplanes and commercial flying boats largely disappeared from mainstream global transport fleets after the 1950s due to aerodynamic drag penalties imposed by heavy, stepped hulls that were required to unstick aircraft from water during takeoff. Eureka circumvents this aerodynamic hurdle through modern naval and aerospace hydrodynamics:

  • Retractable Hydrofoil Dynamics: Rather than relying on a heavy, drag-inducing boat hull, Eureka deploys high-strength retractable hydrofoils. During high-speed water acceleration, the hydrofoils generate dynamic hydrodynamic lift, elevating the carbon-fiber fuselage clear above the water's surface to break hydrodynamic suction.

  • Low-Drag Clean Cruising: Once airborne, the hydrofoil assemblies retract cleanly into the fuselage, allowing the aerodynamic airframe to cruise with the fuel efficiency and low drag profile of a conventional land-based cargo transport.

  • Full Autonomous Flight Envelope: Fitted with indigenous flight control algorithms, redundant satellite telemetry, multi-sensor computer vision, and autonomous obstacle-avoidance suites, Eureka carries out pre-programmed uncrewed water taxiing, takeoff, open-ocean navigation, and precision water landings without requiring dedicated on-board flight crews.

Economics of Coastal Airfreight: Targeting Sub-$1 per Tonne-Kilometer

Global supply chain logistics has historically been divided into two economic extremes: maritime shipping, which handles nearly 80% of global goods slowly over weeks, and conventional air cargo, which costs up to 20 times more per tonne-kilometer.

Aspera Industries is positioning Eureka to target freight transport economics at under $1 per tonne-kilometer on initial commercial deployments, with long-term cost targets projecting below 50 cents per tonne-kilometer at fleet-wide manufacturing scale. At these baseline cost structures, moving high-value perishables, pharmaceuticals, emergency medical supplies, and critical industrial spare parts across littoral corridors transforms from a premium contingency expense into a standard operating distribution pipeline.

Commercial Roadmap and Strategic Horizon

Founded in 2025 by aerospace innovator Khushi Mittal and backed by early-stage venture funding alongside high-level advisory guidance from former Ministry of Civil Aviation leaders, Aspera plans to operate under an integrated build-and-operate model.

While domestic operations are slated to support maritime security outposts and island connectivity programs under India's coastal logistics modernization strategies, Aspera is also targeting deployment across Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, where remote island trade routes remain severely bottlenecked by conventional feeder shipping. Working-scale prototype water evaluations have successfully confirmed the platform's core aerodynamic and hydrodynamic parameters, laying the groundwork for commercial flight certification and active cargo trial deployments.
