Cementing its position as India’s premier maritime hub for renewable energy logistics, V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority in Tuticorin has recorded a 106.55% year-on-year growth in windmill blade cargo handling.

The expansion reflects rising global demand for wind power equipment and highlights VOC Port's specialized handling capabilities for over-dimensional project cargo (ODC). With precision heavy-lift operations and dedicated storage yards, the port continues to facilitate large-scale exports of wind turbine components manufactured across Southern India to key international markets in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.

Handling Infrastructure, Storage Expansion, and Global Export Networks

The growth in project cargo throughput is supported by targeted infrastructure development and operational efficiency:

  • Specialized Berth & Heavy-Lift Operations: Windmill blades and turbine accessories are primarily handled at Berths VOC-3, VOC-5, and VOC-6, utilizing heavy-duty crawler cranes and high-capacity harbor mobile cranes for precision ship-loading.

  • Dedicated Storage & Transit Corridors: To accommodate oversized blades measuring up to 77 meters in length, the port operates a dedicated 100,000 square meter storage facility within the customs-notified area, supported by a specialized transit gate and congestion-free road corridors to ensure seamless yard movement.

  • Major Yard Expansion Pipeline: To meet growing export schedules, VOC Port Authority is developing an additional 60,000 square meters of storage within the customs bond area and 180,000 square meters outside the bond area, alongside plans for an exclusive project cargo terminal dedicated to renewable energy components.

  • Hinterland Manufacturing & Global Reach: Sourced from manufacturing clusters in Bengaluru, Trichy, and Chennai, wind turbine components exported through VOC Port are regularly shipped to major overseas destinations, including the United States, Australia, Turkey, Spain, Finland, and other European nations.
