Strategic Infrastructure Push to Support Vizhinjam’s EXIM Transition

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), India’s largest private port developer and logistics operator, has officially announced plans to establish a modern 100-acre Container Freight Station (CFS) in close proximity to the Vizhinjam International Seaport. As Vizhinjam rapidly scales its operational footprint from a primary transshipment node into a full-fledged Export-Import (EXIM) gateway, the proposed off-dock facility is engineered to provide essential logistics support for hinterland cargo aggregation, customs processing, and container management.

The strategic expansion comes as regional trade volumes through Southern India continue to surge. The new CFS will feature specialized temperature-controlled cold storage zones, high-capacity bonded and non-bonded warehousing, container stuffing and de-stuffing bays, advanced container repair yards, and dedicated parking corridors for heavy commercial vehicles.

Optimizing Dwell Times and Hinterland Connectivity

Industrial sourcing desks and freight forwarders across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka have increasingly turned toward Vizhinjam to capitalize on its deep natural draft and proximity to international East-West shipping lanes. By shifting labor-intensive customs clearances, cargo consolidation, and long-term container storage away from the main port gates to the nearby 100-acre CFS, APSEZ aims to prevent gate congestion, cut vessel turnaround times, and significantly lower container dwell times.

"Establishing off-dock CFS infrastructure is a vital prerequisite for scaling EXIM trade," stated a senior APSEZ logistics executive. "By integrating advanced digital cargo tracking, automated gate appointments, and direct rail and road links between the terminal and the CFS, we are ensuring that exporters and importers across South India experience seamless, cost-effective, and highly predictable logistics operations."

Construction on the initial phase of the CFS facility is slated to begin in the coming quarter, with partial operationalization expected ahead of peak fiscal freight demand.
