<p data-path-to-node="5">Accelerating India's push to enter the top global shipbuilding ranks by 2030, Mumbai-listed shipbuilders <b data-path-to-node="5" data-index-in-node="121">Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL)</b> and <b data-path-to-node="5" data-index-in-node="155">Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI)</b> have secured in-principle approval from the <b data-path-to-node="5" data-index-in-node="248">National Shipbuilding Mission</b> for major brownfield facility expansions in Kochi (Kerala) and Pipavav (Gujarat).</p><p data-path-to-node="6">The approvals, granted under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways' <b data-path-to-node="6" data-index-in-node="76">Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS)</b>, enable both yards to begin initial works for high-capacity fabrication, dock upgrades, and modern crane installations backed by government capital grants.</p><h3 data-path-to-node="8"><b data-path-to-node="8" data-index-in-node="0">₹19,989 Crore SbDS Framework Backs ₹4,000 Crore Kochi JV and Pipavav Crane Infrastructure</b></h3><p data-path-to-node="9">The brownfield sanction opens the door for significant capacity additions across state-run and private shipbuilding sectors:</p><ul data-path-to-node="10"><li><p data-path-to-node="10,0,0"><b data-path-to-node="10,0,0" data-index-in-node="0">CSL’s ₹4,000 Crore Joint Venture in Kochi:</b> State-run Cochin Shipyard will establish a <b data-path-to-node="10,0,0" data-index-in-node="86">₹4,000 crore ($480 million)</b> mega block fabrication facility adjacent to its main yard in Kochi. Developed in a joint venture with South Korea’s <b data-path-to-node="10,0,0" data-index-in-node="230">HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.</b>, the facility will be constructed on land leased from the Cochin Port Authority to support modular hull fabrication and speed up vessel assembly timelines.</p></li><li><p data-path-to-node="10,1,0"><b data-path-to-node="10,1,0" data-index-in-node="0">Swan Defence’s Crane and Yard Upgrade in Pipavav:</b> Operating India’s largest dry dock at Pipavav in Gujarat, SDHI will expand its production footprint using 75 acres of adjoining land. The expansion includes installing a second <b data-path-to-node="10,1,0" data-index-in-node="227">600-tonne+ Goliath crane</b> and new 40-tonne Electric Level Luffing (ELL) cranes to enhance heavy-lift assembly and support large commercial and defense newbuilds.</p></li><li><p data-path-to-node="10,2,0"><b data-path-to-node="10,2,0" data-index-in-node="0">Grant Disbursement Mechanism:</b> Under the SbDS framework which has earmarked <b data-path-to-node="10,2,0" data-index-in-node="75">₹8,261 crore</b> specifically for brownfield shipyard expansions eligible yards can receive capital grants covering <b data-path-to-node="10,2,0" data-index-in-node="187">25% of approved project costs</b>, capped at <b data-path-to-node="10,2,0" data-index-in-node="228">₹1,500 crore per yard</b>. Grants will be released across four milestone-linked tranches (15%, 30%, 35%, and 20%).</p></li><li><p data-path-to-node="10,3,0"><b data-path-to-node="10,3,0" data-index-in-node="0">Driving Global Maritime Targets:</b> The National Shipbuilding Mission acts as the nodal agency monitoring these expansions. The scheme aims to increase India's ship ownership capacity sevenfold to 100 million Gross Tonnage (GT) and boost domestic shipbuilding output fortyfold to 4.5 million GT by 2037 under <b data-path-to-node="10,3,0" data-index-in-node="306">Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047</b>.</p></li></ul>
