NEW DELHI — In a major push to position India as a leading global air freight gateway, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has officially expedited a series of comprehensive multi-hub infrastructure upgrades across the country’s primary international airport networks. The directive aims to significantly scale up India's cargo handling capacities, lower turnaround times for international freighters, and build automated, temperature-controlled facilities to meet the booming requirements of the pharmaceutical, electronics, and e-commerce sectors.

Accelerating Hub Transshipment Capabilities

The upgrade strategy focuses on transforming key metropolitan gateways—specifically Delhi (DEL), Mumbai (BOM), Bengaluru (BLR), and Hyderabad (HYD)—into highly integrated, multi-hub cargo complexes. Under the accelerated framework, the ministry is overseeing the deployment of automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) and elevating terminal processing ecosystems to handle both domestic and international transit cargo seamlessly.

A crucial aspect of these upgrades is the implementation of a dedicated transshipment corridor framework. This allows international cargo arriving from South Asia or Southeast Asia to be swiftly sorted, re-routed, and loaded onto long-haul freighters bound for Europe or North America without undergoing repetitive customs clearance loops.

"To compete effectively on the global stage, our airports must evolve from regional entry points into high-velocity transshipment hubs," a senior official from the Ministry of Civil Aviation stated. "By modernizing airside infrastructure and digitizing the cargo ecosystem, we are building the capacity needed to seamlessly manage millions of tonnes of air freight annually."

Specialized Cool-Chain and Pharma Infrastructure

Recognizing India's dominance as a global pharmaceutical manufacturer, the ministry is prioritizing the rapid expansion of specialized cool-chain infrastructure. The upgrades feature dedicated temperature-controlled zones capable of handling sensitive biologics and vaccines, complete with integrated truck docks that allow zero-temperature-deviation loading.

Furthermore, these facilities are being retrofitted with advanced IoT-based tracking sensors. This gives international shippers end-to-end, real-time visibility into temperature stability and container locations, aligning India's air cargo operations with international quality standards.

Seamless Digital Air Cargo Spines

To complement the physical infrastructure expansions, the Ministry of Civil Aviation is working closely with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to integrate airport cargo systems directly into the national digital public infrastructure. By unifying Air Cargo Community Systems (ACCS) across all major airports, the government aims to eliminate paper-based documentation, automate customs handshakes, and enable dynamic truck-slot bookings, drastically reducing landside terminal dwell times.
