Boosting multi-modal freight connectivity across Southern India, the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) has successfully flags off its first full container rail rake from the newly established Veldurthi Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) in Andhra Pradesh. Bound for a primary industrial cluster in Punjab, the maiden freight run marks the formal commercial activation of the Extended Cotton Rail Terminal (ECRT) facility as a major hub for long-distance domestic cargo distribution.

The direct rail link establishes a high-efficiency transport corridor, bypassing slower road networks to connect the agrarian and manufacturing output of the Rayalaseema region directly with consumer markets in North India.

Multi-Modal Hub Optimizes Transit Logistics for Rayalaseema Trade

The successful rake deployment transitions the Veldurthi terminal into an active focal point for bulk domestic intermodal transport:

  • The Inaugural Freight Dispatch: The inaugural train was fully loaded with high-density commercial commodities before beginning its multi-state overland journey to Punjab. By loading a unified block rake directly at Veldurthi, cargo handlers ensured optimized locomotive scheduling and reduced terminal classification delays.

  • Activating the Gati Shakti Cargo Node: Developed under Indian Railways' flagship Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal policy, the Veldurthi facility features dedicated container handling infrastructure, deep-set rail sidings, and wide landside stacking areas. The terminal is purpose-built to help regional businesses easily convert highway cargo into cost-efficient rail freight.

  • Slashing Overland Transit Overheads: Local industrial associations note that shipping bulk goods via direct block rakes provides substantial advantages over traditional trucking setups. The system lowers baseline freight rates per tonne by nearly 20% to 25%, while protecting high-volume inventories from highway transit hazards and changing weather conditions.

  • Expanding Regional Supply Networks: Beyond the initial run to Punjab, CONCOR plans to utilize the Veldurthi node to structure regular scheduled container loops connecting Andhra Pradesh's manufacturing belts directly to major maritime export gateways, including Chennai, Ennore, and Krishnapatnam ports.
