In a major move to transform industrial logistics, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has proposed the creation of a dedicated rail freight corridor running directly alongside the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway. The strategic rail network is designed to link the state's dominant maritime gateways including the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the mega upcoming Vadhvan Port with inland industrial centers, dramatically reducing transit times and cargo shipping overheads.

The proposal aims to dramatically expand the economic footprint of port-led development across the state. Currently, port logistics benefit only 15% of Maharashtra; the new freight network is projected to extend that structural advantage to nearly 75% of the state's geography.

Capitalizing on Existing Right-of-Way Infrastructure

The core advantage of the proposed rail corridor lies in utilizing pre-allocated infrastructure along the expressway's path to fast-track construction timelines.

701-Kilometer Continuous Loop: Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted that a dedicated right-of-way for a railway network has already been set aside across the entire 701 km stretch of the Samruddhi Highway baseline.

Targeting Low Logistics Overheads: The seamless connection between deep-draft ocean terminals and manufacturing zones is explicitly designed to drive regional logistics costs down to an optimal 7% to 8% of total product value.

Multi-Ministry Coordination: The project blueprint has already been brought to the table for high-level evaluation with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to synchronize state and national rail assets.

Connecting Dry Ports to Emerging Industrial Hubs

The proposed freight corridor will act as a high-capacity digital and physical spine, weaving regional production centers into international export networks. The tracks will link existing dry ports at Jalna (Marathwada region) and Wardha (Vidarbha region) before stretching further east to tie in Gadchiroli, which is rapidly emerging as a primary steel manufacturing city.

With JNPA currently managing roughly 60% of India's container traffic, and the upcoming Vadhvan Port planned to scale to three times JNPA's capacity, state officials view direct, unobstructed heavy-rail connectivity as a vital prerequisite to avoid severe hinterland congestion as trade volumes accelerate toward 2030 targets.
