Gujarat – In a significant step toward transforming India’s maritime landscape,
the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and the International Council on Clean
Transportation (ICCT) India signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) on April 29, 2026. This partnership is designed to accelerate the
transition to sustainable, low-emission operations at Kandla Port, aligning
with the nation's broader "net-zero" ambitions.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">The
partnership is centered on the development of a data-driven, actionable roadmap
aimed at mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution throughout the
entire port ecosystem. By merging the technical expertise of ICCT India with
the operational depth of the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), the collaboration
will identify high-impact interventions across several critical sectors. This
includes creating targeted strategies for reducing emissions from ocean-going
vessel operations and actively promoting the adoption of alternative, cleaner
energy sources for shipping. Furthermore, the roadmap will address port
logistics by decarbonizing port-linked transportation, such as heavy-duty
trucking, and overseeing equipment upgrades to transition in-port cargo
handling machinery to modern, low-emission technologies.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">The
agreement is set to produce concrete recommendations for policy, regulatory,
and infrastructure adjustments required to make sustainable shipping viable at
a global scale.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Building
on a Green Foundation<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">The
recently signed MoU reinforces a series of aggressive sustainability projects
launched by the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) earlier in 2026. A primary focus
is the development of the "Kutch Green Hydrogen Park," which provides
plug-and-play infrastructure for clean energy production. As part of this green
hydrogen hub initiative, a contract for a 5 MW green hydrogen plant was
recently awarded to Oswal Greenzo Energies.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">In
addition to hydrogen, the port is making strides in alternative fuel supply. In
April 2026, the port successfully conducted a trial for shore-to-ship methanol
bunkering. This achievement positions Kandla to become a major future hub for
the regional supply of green maritime fuels.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Furthermore,
the DPA is prioritizing the electrification of its internal operations to
minimize its carbon footprint. The port is currently deploying electric EV
loaders and is transitioning toward the use of "green tugs" for ship
assistance and harbor operations.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">This
landmark partnership serves as a key pillar for the Maritime India Vision 2030,
ensuring that one of India’s busiest ports remains at the forefront of global
climate action and trade resilience.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
